Scott Wilker
Emilio Rivera and Scott Wilker brought their professional lives together and became the duo of “Salon Duo”. This location has been open since February 2001, but the two have been working together since 1992.
Wilker, an Aveda Institute graduate with a background in fashion, developed a strong following at the very regimented Michael Thomas and at Blair Gordon Salon. He emphasizes precision cutting and exquisite blowout/styling.
“The boys” then moved along with their growing clientele to Timothy Paul where they ran a salon within a salon and dreamt of bigger things to come. In June of 2001 their dream was realized in the opening of Salon Duo!

Between the two, all of Chicago’s social scene have relaxed in their chairs for years and continue to do so because of the high level of hairdressing consistently offered them. Emilio and Scott have taken care of members of the news media, local celebrities and high profile personalities. Their clients are often seen in Chicago Social, Town and Country and they were stylists for Channel 7 Monday Makeovers. All in all, it is always about beautiful hair!

Chicago-situated in a 20s era building once owned by L Capone, there is nothing disquieting about the newly open salon duo spot and Chicago's Tony Gold coast neighborhood

With windows facing Lake Michigan, the view from the Spa, located on 1400 N. Lakeshore Dr., looks just as peaceful as the soothing treatments and atmosphere found inside. And that's just the idea, noted Emilio Rivera, the Spanish born owner who designed the 1100 square-foot Spa with the idea of creating a relaxing vibe for the guests even for they are professionally relaxed, cleaned and buffed. Rivera, who often sports Prada Suits and Gucci loafers, is co-owner with Scott Wilker, former art director.

Rivera said too many spas today feel corporate, and he wanted to really move away from them." It's about feeling like you're going to your best friend's home for the day and you feel relaxed once he arrived. Relaxation starts from the inside out, so setting a mood as soon as customers walk in the door is important," said Rivera, 35, whose inspiration for the decor came from the Ritz-Carlton Hotel spa in Paris in the American Club in Kohler, Wisconsin.

To fashion a cozy spa environment, the walls are painted a cheery lemon; personal details like oil printed pillows, chandeliers, a built-in pedicure station with an overstuffed couch, fresh flowers, calming music and scented candles are featured too. The spas adjacent to the 3200 square-foot salon, which opened almost 3 years ago. The decor here is complementary with floral couches, French antiques and fabulous artwork.

" When we opened the salon, there was such a huge demand for the spa, we wanted to make the treatment rooms as calming and relaxing as possible," Rivera said." I like the elegant places that aren't stuffy."

There are three treatment rooms for facials and massages, and each of the rooms' ceilings are draped in white sheer panels for a soft, peaceful effect.

The spa specializes in seasonal treatments, such as the pumpkin revitalizing body treatment and pumpkin facial for colder months, and eggnog facial for the holiday season, and the strawberry-raspberry champagne pedicure for Valentine's Day. A popular treatment is the personal touch spray tan, made from sugarcane. The spa uses French Matus products, as well as the herbal-based line Dr. Schwab. The spies retail area sells the Matus and Dr. Schwab products in addition to a large selection of Illume candles. Retail sales account for about 35% of the business, and services make up the remaining 65%. Prices range from $80 to $200 for facials; $95 for body treatments; $40 for half-hour massage up-to $210 for 90 minute massage, and $50 for airbrush tanning. Manicures and pedicures start from $22 and $42 respectively.

For customers on the run, treatments can be doubled up to save time, such as facial and massage ensemble or a facial with manicure and pedicure.

There are five aestheticians, each of whom have a minimum of 20 years experience-something Rivera said is important in order to deliver the best customer service.

" My aestheticians are well traveled and they go to France to learn the latest techniques," he said. "The service is very much focused on a person-to-person."

Standard offerings while at the spot include daily homemade cookies and desserts, cappuccino, champagne and wine. But for customers who are a bit more demanding, the spa can have lunch delivered; smoked salmon with crème fraîche and capers from the claimed Ambria in the Belden Stratford Residents Hotel isn't a problem.

Twice as Nice
With chic details like chandeliers, lighted mirrors and tall windows overlooking Lake Michigan, Salon Duo could easily be mistaken for a plush French drawing room. But wait, are those hairdryers? And curling irons? Indeed. Look closely, and you'll realize, despite the surroundings, salon do is actually a Hair Salon.

At a time when many salons tend to opt for stark black and white, and metal and chrome interiors, the walls at this newly opened Lakeshore Drive salon are washed and cheery lemon yellow, while custom-made, pale green armoires service stylists work situations and dramatic artwork punctuates the room.

These elegant appointments, which also include fresh-cut flowers, antiques and mineral water served in crystal glasses, could be on their way to making salon duo the swankiest hair place in town.

Which is exactly what owners Emilio Rivera, 33, and former art director Scott Wilker, 30- the"duo" in the name-strove to archive.

" Going to the salon in getting a haircut can be is such a stressful experience, so we wanted to create a calming, yet sophisticated environment where people can relax," noted the Spanish-born Rivera, whose 15 years'experience includes top Chicago salons like Ivan Noel, Blair Gordon and most recently Timothy Paul.

" And it seems to be working; even the most hyper people calm down."

But the idea to create a homey and opulent-looking salon actually came from the couple's travels through Paris four years ago. This is where, Rivera said, they saw a beautiful salons that didn't look anything like the ultramodern, factory-like places fashionable here in the states.

So when the 2000-square-foot space opened up on the ground level of this 1920s-era building once owned by gangster Al Capone, Rivera and Wilker grabbed at the chance.

" This race is absolutely perfect," said Rivera." The weather in Chicago is so cloudy and moody, so we wanted to create a pleasant atmosphere with lots of bright colors to make it fun. We been looking for space like this-with great architecture and a lot of natural light, which is essential for hair color-for a long, long time."

Salon do is located at 1400 N. Lakeshore Dr. Cuts begin at $80, while color starts at $55. Consultation appointments are recommended for first time clients. Salon duo has plans to expand next-door with a full-service spa concept called salon duo North scheduled to open within the year. The spy will feature an extensive array of facials, waxing, body treatments and manicures and pedicures. Women's are required for all services-call 312-664-8710.
