Twice as Nice
With chic details like chandeliers, lighted mirrors and tall windows overlooking Lake Michigan, Salon Duo could easily be mistaken for a plush French drawing room. But wait, are those hairdryers? And curling irons? Indeed. Look closely, and you'll realize, despite the surroundings, salon do is actually a Hair Salon.

At a time when many salons tend to opt for stark black and white, and metal and chrome interiors, the walls at this newly opened Lakeshore Drive salon are washed and cheery lemon yellow, while custom-made, pale green armoires service stylists work situations and dramatic artwork punctuates the room.

These elegant appointments, which also include fresh-cut flowers, antiques and mineral water served in crystal glasses, could be on their way to making salon duo the swankiest hair place in town.

Which is exactly what owners Emilio Rivera, 33, and former art director Scott Wilker, 30- the"duo" in the name-strove to archive.

" Going to the salon in getting a haircut can be is such a stressful experience, so we wanted to create a calming, yet sophisticated environment where people can relax," noted the Spanish-born Rivera, whose 15 years'experience includes top Chicago salons like Ivan Noel, Blair Gordon and most recently Timothy Paul.

" And it seems to be working; even the most hyper people calm down."

But the idea to create a homey and opulent-looking salon actually came from the couple's travels through Paris four years ago. This is where, Rivera said, they saw a beautiful salons that didn't look anything like the ultramodern, factory-like places fashionable here in the states.

So when the 2000-square-foot space opened up on the ground level of this 1920s-era building once owned by gangster Al Capone, Rivera and Wilker grabbed at the chance.

" This race is absolutely perfect," said Rivera." The weather in Chicago is so cloudy and moody, so we wanted to create a pleasant atmosphere with lots of bright colors to make it fun. We been looking for space like this-with great architecture and a lot of natural light, which is essential for hair color-for a long, long time."

Salon do is located at 1400 N. Lakeshore Dr. Cuts begin at $80, while color starts at $55. Consultation appointments are recommended for first time clients. Salon duo has plans to expand next-door with a full-service spa concept called salon duo North scheduled to open within the year.
